Plenty of people take up pickleball in their sixties and seventies, and many of them say it’s the best thing they’ve done in years. It’s easy to start, sociable by design, and it gives real exercise without the punishing running of tennis or squash. Here’s how to start well.
Why it suits later starters
- Small court. About a third of the area of a doubles tennis court.
- Underarm serve and slow ball. Rallies happen from the very first session.
- Mostly doubles. You cover half a small court, not a whole big one.
- Strategy over power. Patience and placement beat strength, which is why experienced older players beat younger newcomers all the time.
Finding the right session
Look for sessions aimed at your age group or at beginners. Across our directory you’ll find examples like 55+ sessions in north-west London, Active Retired pickleball at the University of Cambridge Sports Centre, seniors sessions in Enfield and senior concession pricing at several Belfast leisure centres. Weekday daytime is when most UK pickleball happens: our statistics show weekday mornings are among the busiest times in the week.
Search for sessions near you and look for “beginner friendly” and “paddles provided” on the venue pages.
Kit that makes a difference
- Court shoes, not running shoes. Proper lateral support protects ankles.
- A lighter paddle, which is kinder to elbows and shoulders. Most venues lend paddles, so try a few first.
- Eye protection is worth considering, especially if you wear glasses already; ask about sports glasses.
Staying injury-free
- Warm up for five to ten minutes: our warm-up routine is designed for a sports hall.
- Never backpedal for a lob. Turn and move sideways, or let it go. Falls backwards cause many of the sport’s worst injuries.
- Build up gradually. One or two sessions a week to begin with.
- Check with your GP first if you have any heart, joint or balance concerns.
The social side
For many later starters, the real benefit is the people. Club nights rotate partners, so you’ll meet everyone; many end with tea or a drink. If you’ve moved area, retired or just want new friends, few activities make it this easy.
